About Us
Brief History
The Take Note Singers were formed by David Dell on the 17th July 2002. There was no great master plan at the start - it was just the germ of an idea to gather together some adults so that we could have fun singing.
Initially going by the name music4adults Singing Workshop, the singers met on a weekly basis at the Lane Park Cafe in Upper Hutt. The group of 20 people who started on the first night had grown to 40 singers by the end of the year.
2003 started with two groups of singers, one based in Upper Hutt and the other in Lower Hutt. By the end of the first term, over 90 people were singing on a regular basis - and the pattern that has proved so successful for over 9 years began to evolve.
At the start of 2006 the two Hutt Valley groups were joined together and new groups were formed in Kapiti and Porirua - and all the groups flourished.
In April 2007, a fourth Take Note Singers group was formed, based in Wellington - and in July 2007 we celebrated our fifth birthday with a huge dessert party at the Police College in Porirua. We also launched a brief history book called Now We Are Five - The First Five Years Of The Take Note Singers.
During 2008, Jo Pegler took over the leading of the Wellington group while David Dell continued to lead the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kapiti groups. Since 2009, we have averaging over 200 singers per term across the four groups.
What's so special about the Take Note Singers?
To put it concisely, we are a group of like-minded people who just love singing and who take great pleasure in joining together on a weekly basis to sing our hearts out!
You need to know that we are not a choir and have no desire to be a choir. We are in it for the fun and the joy of singing - with none of the expectations that go along with choirs: no-one is auditioned, you don't have to practice at home, you don't have to attend every week, you don't have to be a trained singer, you don't have to be able to read music - and you don't have to be serious! In fact, if you heard the laughter that echos through the practices, you could be forgiven for wondering what kind of a group you'd come across!
The Take Note Singers provides a great place for people to relax, to offload the stress of the week, to enjoy the company of an amazingly varied group of people and - of course - to gain from the physical and psychological benefits that come when you sing from the heart.
